Paul Walker’s “Fast and the Furious 7” CGI Test Footage

‘Fast-and-Furious-7’-to-Cast-Cody-Walker-not-FinalizedSo I’m not a huge “Fast and the Furious” fan.  I don’t dislike the films.  But I’m not dying to see them either.  Actually, I haven’t even seen them all yet.  I liked the fifth one, but I wasn’t terribly crazy about the sixth.  Maybe they are just a little too over the top for me.  I love cartoon action, but I think I would enjoy these more if they were just a bit more grounded.  I have the same problem with the “Die Hard” films.  They started off with a character who was portrayed as a real person and as the film series progressed, that character became more and more superhuman.  I still enjoyed them (not #5 at all), but I did have a harder time embracing them.  (For the record, the first “Die Hard” is the best action film of all time.)

  2. Miss Piggy, Gonzo.

Instructions
  1. Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid, Dublin and London.
  2. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine-the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit the Frog-and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two.
Notes
  1. The Muppets Most Wanted? I’d say after watching this overlong film they should rename it “The Muppets Least Wanted.” And even they know it. Lyrics from their opening song – “We’re doing a sequel. That’s what we do in Hollywood. And everybody knows that the sequel’s never quite as good.” Hmph!
  2. Let’s get right to it. What a boring, dreadful Muppet film. And believe it or not, I’m being kind. I am not a Muppet hater. I grew up with the Muppets. I watched the Muppet Show every week as a kid. And as a matter of fact, “The Muppet Show” was the first show I ever recorded on VHS tape. I watched that one episode at least ten times. I love the Muppets. But I hated this film.
  3. Some feel the Muppets died when its creator, Jim Henson, passed away. I tend to agree to a certain extent. Once the creative force behind an entertainment property moves on, it never seems said property is ever the same. Jim Henson was the Muppets. And even though I am happy to see it continue, this film really helped to dull that feeling.
  4. So exactly what’s wrong with it? It’s slow, repetitive, the songs are bland and forgettable, and that fun Muppet spirit just happens to be missing. And it’s criminally dumbed down to appeal to young children only. The way I look at it, the Muppets were created for all ages to enjoy. So when parents brought their kids to see these films, they could enjoy the film just as much. But I don’t believe the creators of this film understood that notion. And in this particular case, I don’t even think young kids will like this film. I sat next to a small child who was clearly bored throughout.
  5. To name a few other issues, the script was clunky, the acting was overly hammy (even for a Muppet film), and the cinematography was shamelessly simplistic. To top it all off, Ricky Gervais’ last name in the film is, get this, Badguy! Can you guess what role he played? Even for a children’s film, that’s hitting the nail on the head just a little too hard. And finally, our lovable cast of characters were greatly underused in this film. More Fozzy! More Miss Piggy! More Gonzo! I didn’t come to a Muppet movie to watch Ricky Gervais or an evil Kermit the Frog clone for most of it.
  6. I felt that the previous film in this series really got the tone and feel right. It was a nice reintroduction to the Muppet family. But this installment just didn’t feel like a Muppet Movie. The tone and feel of the film was greatly off and it was predictable from beginning to end. My suggestion to everyone is to go back and watch the very first Muppet Movie. It is superior in every way to this film and it never gets old. And I guarantee it will keep your children’s attention.

The Know It All Joe Vault – Vintage “Star Wars” Interviews

694px-Star_Wars_Logo.svgSo I dug deep into my vault and found some old vintage “Star Wars” interviews from the early ’80’s.  To be more specific, they’re from “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”  These might already be available but I wasn’t going to do a huge search for them.  This was taken from old VHS tapes so the quality isn’t great but still watchable.

Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar Star Trek Enterprise” Trailer

Christopher Nolan's Interstellar Star Trek Enterprise Title CardSo you’re asking right now – is Christopher Nolan making a “Star Trek” movie?  Well, okay, I’d have to answer that as a big fat negative.  At least not that I’m aware of.  But after watching the trailer for his upcoming film “Interstellar” I noticed more than a few similarities to the opening credits sequence to the TV show “Star Trek Enterprise.”  It’s not shot by shot by any means.  But it’s basically almost the same in tone.

Time Traveling with “Doctor Who The Movie” Script

Doctor Who Title CardThere are various rumors that tend to pop up from time to time about potential a “Doctor Who” movie in the works.  Back in the early 90’s, Johnny Byrne wrote a film draft for one of these potential films.  The story revolved around the Doctor, his companions, bad guys, powerful crystals, the Tardis traveling through space and time, and the prevention of a nefarious plot.  In other words, the usual Doctor Who episode times two, with the budget of a feature film.

Going Undercover With Two Veronica Mars’ Scripts

Veronica-Mars-DVD-boxIn celebration of the new “Veronica Mars” film that was just released (and reviewed in the previous post), I am posting two scripts from the television series.

For those who never heard of “Veronica Mars” it was a television series (originally on the now defunct UPN and later moved to the CW) about a teenage girl detective (played by Kristen Bell) set in the fictional town of Neptune, California.  Though the premise may sound a bit child-like and silly, it was actually an extremely well written and adult themed show.  The mysteries were on par with any crime drama currently on any of the networks (or cable).  And if I were to pitch this show, I’d say it was “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” without the vampires.

  1. Stars: Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, Ryan Hansen, Tina Majorino,
  2. Chris Lowell, Percy Daggs III, Francis Capra, Krysten Ritter
  3. Written by: Rob Thomas & Diane Ruggiero
  4. Directed by: Rob Thomas
Instructions
  1. On the eve of graduating law school, Veronica Mars has put Neptune and her amateur sleuthing days behind her. While interviewing at high-end New York law firms, Veronica Mars gets a call from her ex-boyfriend Logan who has been accused of murder.
  2. Veronica heads back to Neptune just to help Logan find an attorney, but when things don’t seem right with how Logan’s case is perceived and handled, Veronica finds herself being pulled back into a life she thought she had left behind.
Notes
  1. Make no mistake of it – ‘Veronica Mars the Movie’ is for ‘Veronica Mars the fans.’ This is very much a TV reunion movie and not a stand-alone feature film. And this comes from someone who is a real fan of the series.
  2. These reunion things never seem to recapture the magic of the series they’re based on, especially once they’ve been off the air for an extended period of time. The only one in recent memory that nailed it was the Joss Whedon feature film “Serenity” based on the “Firefly” TV series. And I have to tell you, Rob Thomas is no Joss Whedon. Thomas is TV good, but he’s not Feature Film good. He’s stuck on the small screen and so is this film. I know they only had a limited budget to work with (funds mostly contributed by fans through Kickstarter), but I still can’t help to think they couldn’t have gone bigger and been more creative with it rather than turning it into an overlong episode of the television show (which is exactly what it is).
  3. But on to the main question – will the fans of the show like it? And the answer is… probably. There is enough fan service to the series here to get one excited for the show they once loved. But I got to tell you, coming from this fan, I felt it fell short. I didn’t need all of the winks and nods. I just wanted to see a show I once loved on the small screen evolve into something larger on the big screen. I didn’t get that. I got a CW reunion episode that was, quite frankly, awkward to watch. If I was to pinpoint the one major thing wrong with it, it would be this… the chemistry was gone. It had been just too long since the series had ended for these actors to really find their characters again. The interactions didn’t feel right. The movie felt off.
  4. I just can’t help to feel there were so many missed opportunities with this film. I would have loved to see the creators expand upon this franchise and incorporate it into a larger world. Instead, they choose to keep it small and high schoolish. But if their main goal was to say ‘thank you’ to the fans, then I would say they most likely achieved that goal.
